Former U.S. Senator Phil Gramm has endorsed Josh Winegarner in the Republican primary runoff in U.S. House District 13.

Gramm, who served in the U.S. Senate from 1985 through 2002, announced the endorsement in a press released distributed by the Winegarner campaign. According to Winegarner’s campaign, the now-congressional candidate once worked for Gramm.

“Josh Winegarner is a strong conservative and free-market advocate, and we need him in Congress. Josh and I worked together,” Gramm said in the statement from the Winegarner campaign. “I know him and I trust him. He will stand with President Trump on the economy and get our energy and agriculture industries back on track. I am proud to endorse Josh Winegarner for Congress.”

In addition to his tenure in the U.S. Senate, Gramm sought the Republican nomination for President in 1996, but dropped out soon after the start of the primary season. Winegarner is not the only candidate Gramm has backed in recent years; Gramm also endorsed Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for President in 2016.

Winegarner is facing former White House Physician Ronny Jackson in the July 14 Republican runoff for Congress. The winner of the runoff will face Democrat Gus Trujillo and Libertarian Jack B. Westbrook in November.
