An Early Preview of February's City Council Meetings

Amarillo City Council is set to hold two regular meetings in February. Here’s an early preview of what to expect during those meetings.

During their February 13th meeting, the council is expected to approve several large spending items, including an item for a replacement ice rink hockey dasher system for the Civic Center and replacements for 2 blower engines at the Hollywood Road Wastewater Treatment Plant, both of which will cost more than half a million dollars. The total for all spending items listed on the published rolling planner for the meeting is nearly $2.4 million, though that total does not include several other spending items that do not yet have an amount listed.

Also on the rolling planner for the February 13th meeting is an item listed as “Krebs Cycling Participation Agreement” and a second and final reading for several rezonings.

During the February 27th meeting, the council is set to receive and consider acceptance of the annual comprehensive financial report for the year ending September 30th, 2023. The council is also set to consider several spending items, though no pricetags are included on the rolling planner.

Also on the rolling planner for the February 27th meeting is a quarterly update from the Amarillo Economic Development Corporation. The council has recently discussed increasing the size of the corporation’s board and recently added the city manager as a non-voting ex-officio member of the board. More recently, the council held a joint workshop with the board. While no items for expanding the size of the board are included on the rolling planner, such an item may soon be coming.

Changes to the way agenda items are also coming. In response to a request by Councilman Les Simpson, information on price, funding source, and if an item is budgeted will be more clearly presented on the agenda. The changes is set to be in effect for the February 13th meeting.

One other item expected to come before the council in an upcoming meeting is a resolution in support of Governor Greg Abbott’s stance on the border policy dispute between the state and federal government. The item has not been included on the rolling planner, but has been requested by Councilmen Tom Scherlen and Don Tipps as well as Mayor Cole Stanley.

The city has stressed that the rolling planner, which can be downloaded at this link, may differ from the finalized agenda.
