Potter County Issues Statement on Mail-in Ballot Error

The Potter County Elections Office released the following press release following an article from The Amarillo Pioneer regarding the mail-in ballot roster:

“Potter County, Texas – February 29, 2024

The Potter County Elections Office regrets to inform the public that an error occurred in the recent release of information regarding absentee ballots. Upon careful review, it has been discovered that the list of Republican voters who returned their absentee ballots contained inaccuracies.

Specifically, it was found that the list erroneously included the names of two voters who purportedly returned their ballots on separate occasions. We closely examined the ballots involved and discovered that the double appearance of the voters’ names was a clerical error. As originally submitted, the voters’ ballots did not include the required voter identification numbers. That omission rendered the ballots incomplete, which required us to return the ballots to the voters for correction and resubmission.

Following standard protocol, we promptly returned the ballots to the voters with an explanation of the problem and the procedure for resubmitting them. The voters did, then, correct the omission and resubmit the ballots. The ballots were not double counted. Rather, what occurred was a failure to delete the names of the voters from the list when their ballots initially were determined to be incomplete and returned to them. Nonetheless, we acknowledge the oversight in including the voters’ names twice on the list and extend our sincerest apologies for any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused.

The Potter County Elections Office is committed to upholding the integrity and accuracy of the electoral process. We want to reassure the residents of Potter County that rigorous measures are in place to ensure the transparency and fairness of all voting procedures. Rest assured, no voter has submitted multiple ballots, and every effort is being made to maintain the highest standards of election administration.
