City Council to Consider Spending $2.6 Million

Amarillo City Council is set to consider over $2.6 million in spending items during their first regular meeting since Andrew Freeman announced he would be stepping down as Interim City Manager and returning to his role as Deputy City Manager.

All spending items for the upcoming meeting are on the consent portion of the agenda, meaning all items are expected to be passed with a single vote.

The largest item, 8F, is an annual motor fuel topping-off contract with Davidson Oil worth $925,745.32. A table summarizing all spending items on the agenda is included at the end of this article.

The most attention-grabbing item on the agenda is scheduled for the end of the meeting, where the council will discuss promoting Floyd Hartman to Interim City Manager. As we previously reported, this follows Andrew Freeman stepping down from the role in the wake of a contentious meeting dealing with a since-retracted shakeup of senior staff spearheaded by Freeman. The item also comes as the city is in the midst of a search for a new permanent city manager.

The city will also consider two rezonings, an ordinance setting standards of care for recreational care programs administered by the Parks and Recreation Department, a lease contract with Greyhound Bus Lines for the Multimodal Transfer Station, and the sale of a tract of land to TXDoT at Loop 335 and SH 136. The council will also discuss the Convention and Visitors Bureau organizational structure and recommendations regarding the Southwest Pool made by the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board.

Notably absent from the agenda is a discussion of the City Plan draft, which was recently made available to the public. The council had been scheduled to receive a presentation on the draft, but that has been postponed. The Planning & Zoning Commission recently discussed the draft, and members of the public are being encouraged to provide feedback online or at a number of open houses at local libraries. More information can be found here.

The meeting will begin at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, March 12th in the Council Chamber on the 3rd floor of Amarillo City Hall. The full agenda and agenda packet can be found at this link. Those wishing to speak during the meeting are encouraged to sign up at this link.
