The race to replace Mayor Tray Payne in Lubbock is heating up, as the candidates enter the final stretch of the campaign.

In the mayoral race, Stephen Sanders, Steve Massengale, Adam Hernandez, Kolton Bacon, Mark McBrayer, and Tony Renteria are running to replace Payne. Massengale and McBrayer are incumbent members of the Lubbock City Council, while Sanders and Hernandez are returning candidates from previous cycles.

The race has focused heavily in the last few weeks on Massengale and McBrayer. Massengale has earned endorsements from several of Lubbock’s former mayors, while McBrayer has earned the endorsements of several conservative organizations, including True Texas Project.

Aside from the mayoral race, voters will also be deciding a handful of races for Lubbock City Council. Michael Lestus Mitchell, Gordon Harris, and Anna "Anah" Menjares are running for City Council District 2. Meanwhile, David Glasheen is unopposed in District 3, Brayden Rose is unopposed in District 4, and Tim Collins is unopposed in District 6.

During the same election, voters will also decide races for three seats on the Lubbock Appraisal District Board of Directors. Micah O’Hair and Jon Bruegel are running for Place 1, Jim Baxa is unopposed for Place 2, and Brant O'Hair, Tom Keisling, and Rusty Smith are running for Place 3.

Early voting is happening now in the Lubbock mayoral race. Election Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 4.
