Amarillo residents are being advised to bring all pets inside on Thursday night, as freezing temperatures are expected.
The Amarillo Animal Management & Welfare department has issued information to residents on how to protect pets during freezing temperatures. Residents are advised to bring pets inside during harsh winter weather. Doing so can protect pets from conditions such as frostbite and hypothermia.
Residents are also advised, under City ordinance, to provide shelter to animals that will be outside. According to an ordinance passed by City officials several years ago, outdoor pets must have a dry, clean, and draft-free shelter to protect them from outdoor elements. Additional heating is also advised.
For those using salts or chemicals to melt snow and ice, residents are advised to wipe the paws of pets who will be near the salts or chemicals. Residents are also advised to provide food and water to all pets to help fight against depleting nutrition.
