Beard to Deliver Plains Bison Lecture at WTAMU

"CSAW, the Center for the Study of the American West at West Texas A&M University, will host a lecture by Donald Beard, superintendent of Caprock Canyons State Park, on “Saving the Southern Plains Bison” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16 at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. A reception will follow.

Beard is active in his efforts to champion this legacy herd of southern plains bison. The herd was donated to Caprock Canyons State Park by the JA Ranch in 1997. Efforts to stabilize the herd's health, grow its numbers and expand its range followed. Today, these animals, descendants of the Charles Goodnight Herd, are recognized as the official “Texas State Bison Herd.” Beard’s lecture will relate the fascinating history of the park’s great success with the herd. Caprock Canyons State Park is located in Briscoe County about 100 miles southeast of Amarillo.

CSAW is dedicated to promoting research, learning and public events related to the American West and the Texas Panhandle as a western region. Beard’s lecture is the latest in an active calendar of events. For the Beard lecture, CSAW partnered with the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum and Texas Wild, another WTAMU program.
