"Three faculty members in the Department of Communication at West Texas A&M University will present their research at the 2017 National Communication Association (NCA) conference Nov. 16-19 in Dallas. This year’s conference theme is “Our Legacy, Our Relevance.” More than 4,200 submissions were organized into 1,100 convention sessions for the event.
Dr. Trudy Hanson, professor of communication studies and head of the department, will participate in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning series which focuses on highlighting work relating to the study and reflection of teaching and learning processes. All methods used within the field of communication can be represented at the conference but Hanson said the series is not limited to teachers and scholars in communication but invites submissions about teaching and learning in a variety of content areas. Hanson’s presentation looks at the hybrid delivery developed for the basic public speaking course and the graduate seminar in Rhetorical Criticism.
Dr. Emily Kinsky, associate professor of mass communication, and Dr. Mary Liz Brooks, assistant professor of mass communication, will present research on #GivingTuesday and how the hashtag was used on Twitter during the actual day of Giving Tuesday in the fall of 2016. Kinsky and Brooks used the Sysomos program to identify the tweets and perform a content analysis with a random number of tweets.
Kinsky also will share updates on a panel regarding undergraduate public relations education in the United States. This project was developed by the Commission on Public Relations Education, in which Kinsky holds a leadership role.
