A sixth parking garage may be planned in downtown Amarillo, according to information contained in City documents.
In the City of Amarillo's Civic Center Facility Needs Assessment Survey Volume II, a sixth parking garage is shown on a map in downtown Amarillo. On the map, the parking garage would be built a block north of the Downtown Public Library and on top of the current homes of Green-Lite Bail Bonds and Buchanan Repair Shop.
The parking garage is listed as a need for the Amarillo Civic Center, in addition to a variety of other Civic Center renovations, including: a new kitchen, exhibit halls, ballrooms, meeting rooms and more. The parking garage is the sixth garage listed in City documents as a planned new parking structure.
However, one planned parking garage, located in the lot east of the Amarillo Civic Center, is not listed in the needs survey. That parking lot looks set to remain some parking, while including green space and added ballrooms for the Civic Center.
According to City documents, other planned and proposed parking garages in downtown Amarillo include a garage that will sit on the east lot of Amarillo City Hall, on the east lot of the Amarillo Civic Center and a lot west of the Herring Hotel, in addition to the garage described by the needs assessment survey.
Two garages listed in the survey, one across the street from Amarillo City Hall, and one next door to the new Xcel Energy building have already been completed.
It is unclear whether the planned parking garages will also include retail space or what the planned price tag for the garages will be.
The only downtown parking garage that has been completed by the City of Amarillo came with a price tag of about $19 million.
