"The School of Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics at West Texas A&M University is home to a newly renovated classroom sponsored by longtime supporter Golden Spread Electric Cooperative, Inc. (GSEC).
GSEC dedicated $35,000 to the renewed lecture space located on the second floor of the engineering building, which will be used by undergraduate and graduate students. The smart classroom is furnished with state-of-the-art equipment and broadcast capabilities.
“We know the impact engineering and science have in our industry and are pleased to contribute to the education of the next generation of engineers along with our 16 member cooperatives,” Golden Spread CEO Mark Schwirtz said.
Established in 1984, GSEC is a consumer-owned public utility that provides electric services for its rural distribution cooperative members. Headquartered in Amarillo, GSEC delivers energy solutions through wind and solar resources and power plants in Texas. The organization also was involved in the development of WTAMU’s new master’s degree in engineering offered for the first time last fall.
“It is a pleasure to be involved with engineering education at WTAMU,” Golden Spread Senior Project Manager Stacy Sanning said. “The undergraduate and graduate programs are expanding in a way that truly supports the workforce needs in this region for businesses like Golden Spread.”
This sponsorship marks a continuation of GSEC’s loyal support the University. Formerly, the organization has backed WTAMU’s rural electric cooperative scholarship, supported the school of music and served as one of the original grass-roots supporters of the WTAMU engineering by contributing $25,000 in 2003.
“Golden Spread has been a long time partner with WT and WT engineering in particular,” Matt Jackson, WTAMU associate dean of engineering, said. “They have been a premier employer of both graduates and interns, a financial supporter of endeavors like our annual engineering camp and provided valuable insight and feedback as we developed both the electrical B.S. degree and the new M.S. degree. We strongly value the relationship we have with such an outstanding company, and this classroom sponsorship is yet another byproduct of that partnership.”"
