Amarillo Speller May Advance to National Spelling Bee

Amarillo student Jeff Zheng is spelling his way across America.

Zheng, a student at Ascension Academy, is competing in the 90th annual Scripps Spelling Bee at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Today Zheng performed well in the third round of the competition and may advance on to the final round.

According to the Scripps Spelling Bee website, Zheng's correct word from this round was tandoori.

If Zheng advances to the final round and wins, he would become the first winner from Amarillo in the history of the Scripps Spelling Bee. The only winner from the Texas Panhandle region was Robin Kral in 1972. Kral was from Lubbock.

A list of the 50 finalists for the next round will be announced tomorrow at 7pm ET.
