APD Arrests Man for Traffic Violation, Recovers Handgun

"On 6-28-17, at about 4:47 PM, APD PACE (ProActive Criminal Enforcement) officers saw a male riding a bicycle in the 600 block of SW 41st. They stopped him for the traffic violation when he failed to signal a turn.

The rider provided first one, then another, false name. Officers found that he was Jose Alberto Martinez age 30. Martinez had two outstanding traffic charge warrants. As the officers were taking him into custody, he told them that he had a gun. The officers found a loaded .22 caliber revolver in the man’s waistband. They also found that the man was in possession of a small amount of marijuana and a glass smoking pipe. While they were booking him into jail, they determined that the handgun the man was carrying had just been stolen in a burglary. The investigation indicates that the person that committed the burglary gave Martinez the gun.

Martinez was booked into the Randall County Jail for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of marijuana under two ounces, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to identify while a fugitive. Officers returned to the area to find the burglary.

They were flagged down by a resident of a home in the 4100 block of S. Monroe. That man had just returned home and found someone had broken a window and entered his house.

Officers determined that the gun they recovered had been stolen in that burglary.

The investigation into the burglary is continuing and no one has been arrested for that offense."
