West Texas A&M University police officer Monty D. Platt has died, according to a statement from the university.
According to WTAMU, Platt passed away at the University Medical Center, in Lubbock, on August 8th. Platt's passing was a result of medical complications from a feral cat bite while on duty.
Platt was bitten by a feral cat two weeks ago while responding to an incident on campus. On August 3rd he was taken to an urgent care center with severe reactions to a medication prescribed to prevent infection from the cat bite. Platt was admitted to ICU that day and was transferred to the burn unit at the University Medical Center in Lubbock, due to the severity of the injuries suffered from the medication. While in Lubbock, Platt was heavily sedated, placed on a ventilator, and was treated for the wounds.
Officer Platt passed in the evening of August 8th.
Platt's services are being conducted by the Brooks Funeral Directors in Canyon. A memorial service will be held at 10am on Friday, August 11 at St. Ann’s Church (605 38th St, Canyon). A graveside memorial service will follow at Dreamland Cemetery Association (26500 U.S. 87 in Canyon).
