Council Renews Red Light Camera Contract, Looks to Add More Cameras

The Amarillo City Council has voted unanimously to renew a contract for red light cameras in Amarillo, along with a commitment to add more cameras in the future.

In a motion made by Councilmember Freda Powell and seconded by Howard Smith, the Council voted 5-0 to renew the City's red light camera contract with American Traffic Solutions. The Council also opted to appoint members to an advisory committee that would be responsible for determining new red light cameras in Amarillo to be added to the City's current contract.

Councilmember Elaine Hays praised city staff for the presentation and said that her decision to vote for red light camera renewal came based off of a recommendation by police chief Ed Drain.

City attorney William McKamie said that advisory board appointments for the red light committee will take place during next Tuesday's meeting.
