City Budget: Golf Courses Cost More Than Building Safety

As the City of Amarillo is in the midst of another round of budget discussions, we will be comparing the costs of different City departments to let taxpayers know where your dollars are going.

Today we are exploring the prices of golf courses versus building safety costs. In the 2017/2018 fiscal year budget for the City, the City of Amarillo is planning to spend $3,581,359 on golf courses. That amounts to a decrease from last year's City spending on golf courses.

Meanwhile, the City of Amarillo is planning to spend $2,941,573 on building safety in the upcoming fiscal year. According to the City budget, money spent on the building safety office will be used to promote "livability and ensure public health, safety, and welfare in the built environment." The City's budget plan for the building safety office amounts to a decrease over last year's building safety budget of about $3,158,000.

The City Council will consider approving the budget for the upcoming fiscal year next month.
