"Amarillo College is offering a program designed to help English language learners obtain a commercial driver license (CDL) and prepare for careers in professional truck driving.
To be eligible for the Professional Driver Training Program for English Language Learners, men and women must possess a high-intermediate to advanced-level competence in basic English, be at least 18 years old, and have a valid Texas Driver’s License.
They also must attend an informational meeting and language-proficiency testing session on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at Amarillo College’s East Campus.
The informational meeting begins at 10 a.m. in the Logistics Training Center located at 1310 F. Ave., Room 503, on the East Campus.
English language proficiency testing will be administered, also on the East Campus, immediately after the meeting. It will take approximately three hours to complete. Children may not attend.
Students who qualify for the Professional Driver Training Program for English Language Learners, will utilize state-of-the-art driving simulators and receive classroom and on-road instruction throughout the six-week, 240-hour course.
The curriculum is geared toward successful preparation of all students to pass both the written and driving portions of the state CDL exam.
Students who successfully complete the entire course and pass the state exam will receive a Class “A” CDL and a certificate of completion, and they will be qualified to secure an entry-level job as a commercial motor vehicle driver.
