“Effectively engaging almost 10,000 students is a tall order that keeps Amarillo College faculty and staff on their toes daily, but the active AC workforce still finds time to shift the focus from campuses to community on a given weekend.
Such will be the case on Saturday, Oct. 27, when as many as 200 volunteers from among AC’s faculty and staff will turn out for the College’s annual AC Cares volunteer day.
The project is an opportunity for the AC workforce to provide assistance in a variety of capacities throughout the city.
Members of the AC Family will be pitching in on that particular Saturday at the following community-service organizations (at the times indicated):
Amarillo Activity Youth Center, 816 S. Van Buren St. – 9 a.m. to noon
Amarillo Habitat for Humanity, 2626 Paramount Blvd. – 9 a.m. to noon
Downtown Women’s Center, 812 SW 10th Ave. – 10 a.m. to noon
Heal the City, 609 S. Carolina St. – 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Maverick Club, 1923 S. Lincoln St. – 9 a.m. to noon
Salvation Army Homeless Shelter, 400 S. Harrison St. – 9 a.m. to noon
Salvation Army Thrift Store, 1211 SE 27th St. – 10 a.m. to noon
Storybridge, 2406 SW 3rd Ave. – 9 a.m. to noon
The Children’s Home, 3400 S. Bowie St. – 9 a.m. to noon
Wesley Community Center, 1502 S. Cleveland St. – 9 a.m. to noon
Additionally, some of the AC workers will visit individual homes within the community to assist the fence-building endeavors of Texas Panhandle Pups Unchained.
The College introduced AC Cares volunteer day in 2015, and it has become an annual event for cleaning, repairing, painting, sorting, building and more. Employee family members also are encouraged to join in, and many do.
When the work is finished, AC Cares volunteers will gather for lunch served from 11:15 a.m.-1 p.m. by the AC Cooking Team at the Ware Student Commons on the Washington Street Campus.”
