About 140 students from more than a dozen colleges and universities will converge on Amarillo College this week to compete for medals at a regional meeting of the U.S. Information Technology Collegiate Conference (USITCC).
In association with the Amarillo Technology Initiative, AC’s Department of Computer Information Systems is co-hosting – along with Oklahoma Panhandle State University – the three-day gathering of South Central Region schools.
All the competitive events will be in Byrd Business Building on AC’s Washington Street Campus, beginning at 7 p.m. today – Thursday, Oct. 25. Additional contests will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, and from 8-11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.
A conference registration and information table will be in evidence each day in the first-floor common area of Byrd Building.
The event concludes at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday with an awards ceremony at the Amarillo Civic Center, Regency Room B.
Students will vie for medals in the following IT categories: C# Programming, Cybersecurity, Database Design, Java Programming, Microsoft Office Solutions, PC Troubleshooting, Network Design, Mobile Applications and System Analysis.
Schools joining co-hosts AC and OPSU at the event are Brookhaven College, Cameron University, Hardin-Simmons University, Missouri State University—Springfield, Northwestern State University of Louisiana, Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology, Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Phillips College, Tarleton State University, Texas State University, University of Mississippi and West Texas A&M University.
“We are gratified by the great level of interest in this event,” Dewayne Higgs, AC instructor of CIS and conference chairman,” said. “Our ability to attract so many excellent programs to participate in this conference says something about how far our reputation has spread, I think.”
Amarillo College students demonstrated their ability to successfully compete on a national stage last April by emerging from the inaugural U.S. Information Technology Collegiate Conference at San Antonio with two second-place awards and an honorable mention.
