A student at Texas Tech University is challenging the incumbent mayor of Lubbock in the May 5th municipal election.
John Cothran, a senior communication studies and psychology dual major from Texas Tech University, is challenging Lubbock's Mayor Dan Pope in the May general election. Cothran turned in his paperwork on Friday to run against Pope after the incumbent's only challenger, Paul Dunn, dropped his bid for re-election.
Following his campaign filing, Cothran told Texas Tech's Daily Toreador that he is running with a focus on making energy more affordable in Lubbock.
“I want to make sure that everybody in Lubbock has access to affordable energy and they can afford their electric bill,” Cothran said. “I want to make sure that the public utilities are affordable. I ultimately want to make sure that no stone is left unturned when it comes to making the infrastructure more efficient.”
Mayor Dan Pope was first elected in 2016, defeating three opponents in the general election. Prior to that, he served on the Lubbock Independent School District board of trustees.
Voters will decide the race on May 5th.
