The election process for the Amarillo Independent School District Board of Trustees is set to be discussed during a meeting on Monday night.
On Monday, members of the Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees will discuss having a report commissioned regarding a potential switch to single-member districts for the school district's board. The Board will consider approving commissioning a future administrative report regarding election options, namely a switch from cumulative voting to single-member elections.
Currently, Amarillo voters are given three to four votes to cast in the election for the school board and each candidate's name is listed three to four times on the ballot, depending on the year of the election. Voters can then cast all of their votes for one candidate, spread their votes around to multiple candidates, or vote for none of the candidates listed. The current system of cumulative voting was put into place by the board to settle a lawsuit filed against AISD in 1998. If the voting system was changed to single-members, voters in Amarillo would then elect one member from their designated area in Amarillo that would represent their neighborhood or district.
Also during Monday's meeting, trustees will consider approving various contracts for renovation and construction projects and an expansion of the AISD North Heights committee.
The board will meet tonight, February 26th, at the Amarillo ISD Education Support Center (7200 Interstate 40 West). The meeting begins at 6pm.
