Amarillo College officials are looking to execute a contract for a new Amarillo Independent School District program next week.
On Monday, March 19th, officials from Amarillo College and Amarillo ISD will sign a deal for AISD to take part in Amarillo College's Diplomas and Degrees program. AISD superintendent Dr. Dana West and Amarillo College president Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart will sign the deal, ratifying an order for AISD to take part in the program.
The Diplomas and Degrees program is already being utilized by various school districts in the area. Under the program, high school students have the opportunity to begin working toward associate degrees as freshmen. Some students who go through the program may enter their junior year in a university system following high school graduation.
“Students who qualify for and succeed in Diplomas and Degrees graduate from college faster and do so at considerable savings," AC dual credit co-director Jason Norman said in a statement. "The cost of dual credit courses is as affordable as it gets – $50 a credit hour – and since they are still in high school, families are often saving on two years of room and board, too."
