APD Saves Man Being Attacked by Dog

Amarillo Police officers saved a man who was being attacked by a dog last week.

APD reports that on Friday morning, officers were dispatched to the 3900 block of Linda Drive, where they found a man attempting to fight off a large dog with a stick. The man had called emergency dispatchers and said that he was being attacked by the dog.

Officers got out of the vehicle and attempted to help the man. The officers scared off the dog and blocked the man from the dog. The dog then came back across the street, barking and baring its teeth. Officers again scared off the dog using techniques taught in the Canine Encounters Class.

One of the officers then turned his back to check on the man and the dog charged at him. The officer turned to confront the dog and it turned toward the second officer. The dog was then about to bite one of the officers and the officer fired a shot that hit the dog in the upper body. The dog lunged at the officer again and the officer fired a second shot, at which point the dog retreated to a nearby yard.

Animal Management and Welfare officials located the dog and transported it to a vet. The owners of the dog were located and it was found that the dog had escaped its back yard.

The man who was attacked and the officers were uninjured. Another man also told officers that he was chased by the dog prior to the incident.
