Resident Calls for Resignations During City Council Meeting

One resident called for possible resignation of members of the Amarillo City Council during an otherwise uneventful meeting on Tuesday night.

Claudette Smith, an Amarillo resident who is currently suing Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson and incumbent City Councilmembers for alleged violations of the Texas Open Meetings Act, called for Councilmembers to resign, if they cannot, in her words, "follow the law."

Smith echoed comments from a similar petition that is being circulated on social media, which calls for Nelson's resignation. The petition was started after Nelson had resident Kip Billups escorted from April 3rd's City Council meeting for clapping. Billups was handcuffed inside of the City Council Chambers and was booked into the Potter County Jail on charges of disrupting a meeting.

The petition, which was started by Addie Walsh, calls for Nelson to resign. The petition states that Nelson has had a "reign of abusive power" and that she should step down from her office.

Nelson took office in May of 2017, after winning a three-way contest for the office. Her regular term is set to expire in May of 2019, following an election.
