City of Amarillo Seeks Amendments to Local Animal Laws

The City of Amarillo will begin taking feedback this week on proposed changes to local laws dealing with animals.

According to City officials, the City is currently in the process of considering amending the Amarillo Local Government Code dealing with animals. Several changes are proposed to the code, including adding of definitions and creation of some new restrictions.

Major takeaways from the proposals include:

  • Proposal to make it unlawful for a person to interfere with an animal control officer who is attempting to apprehend an animal. This is punishable by a citation, if approved.

  • Addition of fees for breeder's permits ($500 or $1000)

  • Proposal to charge persons surrendering animals $20 per surrender

  • Addition of "abandonment" to definition of inhumane treatment

  • Grounds for revocation of a breeder's permit

City of Amarillo officials will take feedback on the proposals at a series of meetings over the coming weeks. The public is invited to attend the meetings and provide feedback. Planned meetings include:

  • May 23, 2018 at 5:00 - 6:00PM - North Branch Library (1500 N.E. 24th Ave.)

  • May 24, 2018 at 1:00PM - 2:00PM - East Branch Library (2232 E. 27th Ave.)

  • May 30, 2018 at 4:30PM - 5:30PM - Northwest Branch Library (6100 W. 9th. Ave.)

  • May 31, 2018 at 1:00PM - 2:00PM - Southwest Branch Library (6801 W. 45th.)

  • June 6, 2018 at 6:00PM - 7:00PM - Downtown Branch Library (413 E. 4th Ave.)
