"People who are passionate about using technology for creative problem solving and innovation are invited to participate in the upcoming Yellow City Hack-A-Thon at Amarillo College.
The 24-hour, tech-innovation marathon will take place in the upper-level common areas of Byrd Business Building on AC’s Washington Street Campus, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, and concluding at 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 12.
The Hack-A-Thon is free and open to anyone 16 and older – from novice techies to working or retired professionals. To register, visit hack.yellowcity.io.
The free event – presented by Amarillo College, the Amarillo Tech Meetup, and the Amarillo Technology Initiative – will feature teams of 1 to 5 individuals who will be charged with planning and building a creative solution to a local problem.
That problem, along with the competitive event’s broad theme, will be revealed at the start of the Hack-A-Thon.
AC’s Dewayne Higgs, CIS instructor and co-organizer of Hack-A-Thon, says the event is a follow-up to last year’s successful Amarillo Make-A-Thon, and individuals without a team can easily join one upon arrival.
“This year we’re going to have a more traditional Hack-A-Thon, a competition in which teams try to build something as it relates to the theme,” Higgs said. “Keeping the theme under wraps brings a degree of spontaneity to the event.
“We’re expecting many of Amarillo’s most creative and passionate programmers, designers, entrepreneurs and marketers to be here and create something awesome, and they will be judged on what they produce.”
Awards will be given for quality, creativeness and more. Mentors will be standing by to offer advice, and food, beverages and workspaces will be provided. A quiet room will be handy for those wishing to rest during the marathon’s wee hours.
