Editorial: Meeting Time Change is Convenient for City Council

It is rather convenient how the schedule worked out for the City Council's proposed meeting time change.

Last week, Councilmembers discussed changing the meeting time of the Amarillo City Council's regular meetings from 5pm to 7am. While Council did not make an official decision, it was stated that a change would likely take place sometime in September.

How convenient.

The proposed 90 day trial period for the change, if begun in September, will end around December or January. This means the change will end just in time for election filing around January 15th.

Perhaps this is just coincidence. Or, possibly, this is the City Council attempting to make a desired change, while also erasing the change when voters start paying attention. Either way, the change is one that is incredibly ill-conceived and one that will not serve the people of Amarillo well.

In any case, let's hope that Mayor Ginger Nelson and the City Council remember that representing Amarillo is about more than just playing politics. It's also about representation: something our City Council seems to have forgotten.
