The push is underway in El Paso to have the city's current mayor recalled from his office.
Last week, it was reported that an El Paso resident filed a letter of intent with the El Paso city secretary to begin collecting signatures to recall Mayor Dee Margo from his office. Zachary Gonzalez, an open space advocate in El Paso, is the person behind the effort to recall Margo, according to the El Paso Times.
According to information from KTSM News in El Paso, Gonzalez is seeking to collect 7,000 signatures in 59 days to force the recall. Supporters of the effort attended community meetings this week to collect signatures, including one at which Margo was in attendance.
Dee Margo has been mayor of El Paso since 2017. First elected last year, the former state representative defeated David Saucedo in a runoff to replace Mayor Oscar Leeser. After being elected, Margo made headlines statewide when he travelled to Austin with Lubbock mayor Dan Pope and Amarillo mayor Ginger Nelson to advocate against property tax reform legislation.
