"Gary Goldberg’s images of Texas Singer-Songwriters will be on display Aug. 20 to Sept. 12 at the Southern Light Gallery on Amarillo College’s Washington Street Campus.
The gallery is located on the first floor of the Ware Student Commons, and the exhibit is free and open to the public.
Goldberg is a professor of art at Midwestern State University. His photography has been published in Texas Monthly, Harpers & Queen, Exposure, American Profileand more.
He has been the recipient of an Emerging Artist Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and his work is included in numerous collections, from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum to the Library of Congress.
His idea for a photo series featuring singer-songwriters of Texas came about after he attended a musical event in Archer City called The Late Week Lazy Boy Supper Club.
“I became a regular there,” Goldberg said. “I was drawn into the music, the lyrics and the personalities of these homegrown musicians. I decided to create a body of work that would leave its own impression on the music culture.
“I chose to make informal outdoor portraits of these artists,” he said. “I wanted the viewer to be able to see the faces of these individuals clearly and come to know something about these people by examining my photographs.”
After photographing many of the performers in Archer City, Goldberg expanded his scope, traveling throughout the state to track down his subjects from a list of 100 artists he amassed. In the end, he narrowed his photo series to 50 images, several of which will comprise his exhibit at AC.
“I have always loved Gary’s project, and I am excited to share pictures of some of the great Texas singer-songwriters with our community,” said René West, assistant professor of photography and curator of Southern Light Gallery. “Many of the artists selected for this exhibition are from this region, such as Terry Allen, Joe Ely, Susan Gibson, Jimmy LaFave and Lloyd Maines.”
