“Amarillo College Art Collective is pleased to announce that veteran animator Michael Mattesi, author of the FORCE drawing books and creator of the FORCE drawing theory, will share his insights and expertise over three days at AC.
Mattesi, who has collaborated with Pixar, Disney, Marvel, Hasbro, Microsoft and a great many more, will be at the College Sept. 24-26 to present six “FORCE Drawing Basics” workshops, with models. He will cap his visit with an evening talk.
Thanks to generous funding provided by AC’s Student Life, Mattesi’s presentations on the Washington Street Campus will be free and open to the public; however, space in the workshops is limited to 20 participants each.
To reserve a spot, contact Stephanie Jung, instructor of art, at sajung@actx.edu. The workshops will be in Russell Hall, Room 112 according to this schedule:
Monday, Sept. 24 – (3) 9-11:45 a.m.; 12:30-3:15 p.m.; and 6:30-9:15 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 25 – (2) 9-11:45 a.m.; and 2-4:45 p.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 26 – (1) 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Jung said she discovered Mattesi’s work when searching for ways to make her Life Drawing class more engaging for students, particularly those interested in animation.
“Mr. Mattesi talked about drawing the figure in a way that was exciting, fresh, and emphasized capturing the life force of the model, which is so important,” Jung said. “But he also really shows how to take what you learn in figure drawing and apply it to the creation of your own characters.
“I immediately felt that his approach would be incredibly inspiring to our students. I am so grateful to Student Life for funding Mike's visit to Amarillo College."
Mattesi’s will cap his visit to the College with an evening talk – also free and open to the public – from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26 at Russell Hall, Room 131. Reservations are not necessary. His topic will be about how drawing can be life transforming, in and out of the studio.
The author of four FORCE books, and counting, published in numerous languages and utilized to inspire and educate artists around the world, Mattesi has widely taught his FORCE techniques for more than 20 years.
He describes FORCE as a drawing process that is not so much about the drawing as it is about the thinking and experience that creates a drawing. Many of his students have gone on to establish careers in animation, video games, graphic design and the fine arts.”
