Former El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke told television icon Oprah Winfrey this week that he has thought about running for president in 2020, and a decision on a possible bid will come “really soon.”
Following his loss to Republican Ted Cruz last November, O’Rourke was immediately considered a top contender for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, eventually expressing the sense that he would not rule out such a possibility. After a road trip, O’Rourke was on stage with Oprah on Tuesday, talking about a possible White House bid.
"The serious answer is really soon," O'Rourke said regarding a decision on a possible bid "Before the end of this month."
O’Rourke said he is trying to decide whether his family - including his wife and three children - are ready for the prospect of jumping into another bid for office. O’Rourke’s wife and children often were spotted at the Democrat’s campaign events last year.
Also, during the interview with Oprah, Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper told the television host that he hopes O’Rourke will run for president. Cooper, director and star of the acclaimed “A Star Is Born,” said he wants the El Paso native to make a bid, saying America needs “inspiration.”
The interview with O’Rourke will air next Friday on the Oprah Winfrey Network.
