Amarillo College STEM Lecture Series to Feature Research Scientist

A biomedical research scientist at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy will talk about methodology used to investigate environmental pollutants during an upcoming guest lecture at Amarillo College.

The STEM Research Center Lecture Series, which is free and open to the public, will feature Dr. Dayanjan Wijesinghe at noon Thursday, April 17 at Ordway Hall on AC’s Washington Street Campus.

The lecture series is made possible by a $4.9 million grant the College received in 2016 from the U.S. Department of Education.

Wijesinghe is director and principal investigator for the VCU School of Pharmacy’s Laboratory of Pharmacometabolomics & Companion Diagnostics.

His presentation at AC will cover mass spectrometry-based analysis for investigating environmental toxins and pollutants such as the presence of prescription medications in river water. He is also an authority on the use of virtual reality to study environmental niches that are difficult to access.

For more information about Wijesinghe’s lecture on April 17, the STEM Research Center Lecture Series in general, or the new academic opportunities being developed in STEM fields at AC, please contact Gerek Burford, director of the STEM Research Center, at 806-371-5152 or gerek.burford@actx.edu.
