The Sod Poodles collected just one run for the second straight game at Security Bank Ballpark, falling to the Midland RockHounds 7-1 as the RockHounds extended their win streak to six games.
Midland starter Brian Howard tossed seven strong innings for the win, allowing just a single run in the seventh on an RBI single from Amarillo outfielder Buddy Reed.
Left-hander Adrian Morejon started the game for the Sod Poodles and fired two scoreless innings. He was replaced in the third by righty Jesse Scholtens, who kept the ballgame scoreless with a perfect third inning.
In the fourth, the RockHounds took a 1-0 lead on Chase Calabuig’s RBI single.
Midland then rallied for a five-run frame in the sixth inning. Taylor Motter collected an RBI single while Calabuig made it 3-0 with a sac fly. Brallan Perez singled in a run to extend the lead to 4-0 against Scholtens.
David Bednar replaced Scholtens and would later allow a two-run single to Nate Mondou, as the RockHounds took a 6-0 advantage. Scholtens ultimately was charged with five runs allowed in 3.1 innings.
After the Soddies got a run in the seventh, the RockHounds responded with a run off Bednar in the bottom half of the inning.
Seth Martinez and Trey Cochran-Gill combined to throw two scoreless innings of relief out of Midland’s bullpen. Amarillo righty Dauris Valdez tossed a scoreless eighth for the Sod Poodles.
The Sod Poodles and RockHounds finish their series on Wednesday night. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. Amarillo sends righty Kyle Lloyd to the hill while Midland counters with righty Grant Holmes.
The Sod Poodles return home to HODGETOWN for the start of a four-game series against the Frisco RoughRiders on Thursday, July 4.
