At West Texas A&M University, the Paul and Virginia Engler College of Business was approved to include a Society for Human Resource Management – Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) preparation program.
The SHRM-CP certification is an industry standard to recognize knowledgeable people in the HR field. The College of Business at WT worked with SHRM to make sure the curriculum aligned with the knowledge needed to pass this exam.
“Qualifying WT graduating seniors and graduate students with majors in management or human resources can sit for the SHRM-CP exam and individuals that pass are recognized by SHRM as having the same level of competencies as HR professionals with a year of industry/work experience,” Dr. Jillian Yarbrough, clinical assistant and professor of management at WT, said.
This year, WT’s first two students are Lawrence Burns, a recent WT grad with an M.B.A., and Keaton Irons, a current M.B.A. student from Canyon, passed the SHRM-CP exam and earned designation.
“I’m working at Xcel Energy in talent acquisition, and I believe that the expertise the SHRM-CP credential represents is put to use every day in my job. I feel like earning the SHRM-CP, especially at such an early point, is going to help open up a lot of doors later on in my professional career. The credential helps set me apart from my peers and shows that I have a high level of HR knowledge and skills that many companies seek,” Irons said.
