Acker Named Amarillo College Chief of Police

Scott Acker, a seven-year veteran of the Amarillo College Police Department, has been named AC’s chief of police.

Although Acker’s appointment is not effective until May 1, he has served as interim chief since November of 2019, when Stephanie Birkenfeld, who previously held the post, departed the College.

I’m excited and honored to have this opportunity,” said Acker, who has risen steadily through the ranks since joining the department – from corporal to lieutenant and now chief.

“My priority will always be to provide a safe environment for our students, faculty, staff and anyone who visits our campuses,” he said. “I’ll also strive to ensure that our entire department observes and upholds AC’s Culture of Caring.”

Before joining the AC Police Department, Acker was a patrolman for nine years with the Amarillo Police Department.

At various times during his tenure with at AC, Acker has served as the crime prevention officer and the campus safety officer. He has conducted numerous active-shooter training sessions for members of the AC workforce, and he has led awareness seminars for students that focused on domestic violence and sexual assault.

“Chief Acker is a tremendous asset for Amarillo College and the Police Department,” said Chris Sharp, vice president of business affairs, to whom the chief of police directly reports. “His leadership skills along with his experience will help guide the department to the next level.

“I’m looking forward to working with Chief Acker and his team. I know great things are in store for Amarillo College.”
