This week, the Amarillo Pioneer will be bringing our readers interviews with a few of the candidates for the Libertarian Party’s presidential nomination. The Libertarian Party will select its candidates for President and Vice President in a nomination vote this weekend and the party’s ticket will be one of four eligible to appear on the Texas ballot in November.
With candidates across the political spectrum debating new spending and programs, one Libertarian presidential candidate is focusing his campaign on the national debt.
Phil Gray is seeking the Libertarian nomination for president in 2020, devoting a major part of his campaign to the issue of the national debt. Gray says that his focus on the debt makes him the only presidential candidate this year focusing on this issue.
“Nobody in the main parties or the Libertarian Party will address the national debt,” Gray said.
For an example of trimming federal government spending, Gray points to the recent stimulus packages approved by Congress in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gray believes that the stimulus packages approved and signed by President Trump should have consisted of loans instead of “gifts.” Gray also supports transitioning federal government grants to states and municipalities to loans to reduce taxpayer funded spending.
“We can actually balance the budget by making these loans that will be paid back instead of gifts to states and cities,” Gray said.
Gray believes he is the best candidate for Libertarian delegates to support for the presidential nomination because his message will best resonate with delegates and voters.
“My approach is to offer delegates a choice,” Gray said. “If I can address it properly and reach each of the delegates with my message, I think they will support it.”
Gray also says he will have a unique approach to the general election campaign, focusing his campaign resources on the suburbs to reach new voters who will consider voting for the Libertarian nominee.
“I want to concentrate on the suburbs of the major cities,” Gray said. “I want to offer them a choice. If we carry 36 percent of the state’s population, then we carry the state. I believe my message will resonate.”
