Amarillo College's Sidewalk Art Contest Scheduled for Next Month

Chalk It Up, the annual sidewalk art contest at Amarillo College, is slated to unfold on Saturday, July 25 on the Washington Street Campus, and artists are invited to register for the free event at http://info.actx.edu/chalkitup.

Chalk It Up is an award-winning collaboration between AC and Panhandle PBS and is now in its fourth year. It has a history of attracting crazy-good artwork from artists of all ages.

Always held on the last Saturday of July, the free-to-enter event is from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the Oeschger Family Mall. The artists vie for cash prizes. Last year, a total of $900 was awarded.

A limited number of registrations will be accepted – on a first-come basis – from both individual artists and/or teams of two persons. Entries are subject to approval. Due to the limited field, anyone wishing to compete should enter without delay.

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, spectators cannot be permitted to join in this year’s festivities until after the chalk dust settles; however, anyone wishing to take a leisurely stroll through the art-adorned campus after the artists have gone – by mid-afternoon – will be welcome to do so.

And if this year’s chalk-art creations hold true to form, they will be well worth waiting to see.

Entrants will be assigned eight-foot squares on which to create their masterpieces, with plenty of physical distancing allotted to support optimal safety and comfort (of course providing one’s own knee pads is advisable, too). Artists are to complete their works by noon, giving the judges plenty of time for a proper assessment.

A panel of judges representing the local art community is charged with determining the three best entries. Prizes are awarded around 1 p.m.
