Editorial: Josh Winegarner's China Conspiracy

Why is Josh Winegarner pushing a conspiracy about China just weeks before Election Day?

The Winegarner campaign unveiled another attack ad on his opponent, former Physician to the President Ronny Jackson, following the duo’s debate in Wichita Falls on Wednesday. The ad accuses Jackson of working for a Chinese company and “profiting from COVID-19.” Another ad produced by Ag Together PAC, a group supportive of Winegarner, is also blasting Jackson for working for the company.

Jackson explained that he was a consultant for a spa company, which occurred before the COVID-19 outbreak, during the debate on Wednesday. That didn’t stop Winegarner’s campaign from attacking Jackson with his unfounded allegations about profiting off of COVID-19.

This is fascinating to see Winegarner stoop to these tactics in what can best be described as a campaign that appears to become more desperate with each passing day. Instead of adequately explaining why he lobbied against the Trump administration on NAFTA and country-of-origin labeling while claiming to be a massive supporter of the President, Winegarner has essentially been attaching his hopes of winning office to attack whatever possible weaknesses his campaign consultants can find in Jackson. The problem with this strategy, however, is that while Winegarner has been in constant attack mode, disingenuously seeking some faux transparency in this contest, he has completely failed to be transparent about his own record.

While Josh Winegarner continues to run from his record, his campaign is attempting to create a distraction with a fake conspiracy about Jackson, China, and COVID-19.

If I might make a suggestion to voters in Texas’ 13th Congressional District, don’t buy what Winegarner is selling.

Instead, if voters want real transparency in this race, instead of buying into a conspiracy being touted by the Winegarner campaign, they should demand Winegarner answer for his lobbying record. It would be a shame to elect someone to Congress who has so many question marks on his record but who also refuses to give a straight answer about why he lobbied the way his employer disclosed he did on these issues.

Since Josh Winegarner is trying to create a phony call for transparency, I will once again make a real call for transparency and ask Josh Winegarner to tell voters the truth about his lobbying record.

Voters deserve honesty, Mr. Winegarner. Stop peddling your conspiracies, and own up to your record. Remember, voters are watching.
