President Donald Trump handily carried both counties in Amarillo in 2016, but local Democrats are hoping to make some noise in a potentially competitive statewide presidential race this year.
Supporters of Democrat Joe Biden’s presidential campaign have started a yard sign drive to plant Biden yard signs across Amarillo. The signs are raising awareness for the campaign of Biden and his running mate, California’s junior U.S. Senator, Kamala Harris.
“I am very aware this is a Republican dominated area,” Amarillo Biden supporter Carole McDaniel said. “I see it every day. However, there are many Democrats here and we are increasing in number. We all need to co-exist peacefully.”
The supporters of Biden are hoping that 2020 could be the first year since 1964 that the Democratic presidential nominee could carry the state of Texas. For McDaniel, Biden has the right background and personality that appeals to her.
“I like Joe Biden's platform, but even more, I like the man. He is kind, he is compassionate, he truly cares about all people, he is honest, he has integrity. He is respected by world leaders. I can sleep at night without worrying about what he might tweet or who he might insult. The core characteristics of a person are extremely important. He gives me hope for this country.”
The latest poll released for the presidential race in Texas shows a razor thin contest brewing, with Biden and Trump locked in a statistical tie that is within the margin of error. In that poll from Public Policy Polling, Biden led 48-47%. Libertarian Jo Jorgensen, the third candidate on the ballot in Texas, was not included in the poll.
If you would like a Biden yard sign, McDaniel says you may contact her for additional information.
