Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant Dakota Meyer will speak at the Hope for Our Heroes Gala in Amarillo on Saturday, October 3.
Meyer received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Ganjgal on September 8, 2009 in Afghanistan and is the second youngest living recipient of the Medal of Honor. President Barack Obama award Meyer the Medal of Honor in 2011, and Meyer later wrote a best-selling book about his experiences, Into the Fire: A Firsthand Account of the Most Extraordinary Battle in the Afghan War. Meyer insists that he is not a hero, and that any Marine would do the same.
According to the organizers of the event, the event will include a happy hour, dinner, and live auction. Semi-formal attire is requested. The gala will benefit area veterans and their service dogs.
The event will be held at the Embassy Suites location at 550 S. Buchanan in downtown Amarillo, beginning at 5:30pm.
