Following yesterday’s announcement by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regarding eligibility for fall sport student-athletes in Division II, West Texas A&M will pursue additional games for the 2020 season.
The Division II President’s Council voted to lift the limit on competition to retain a year of eligibility for fall sport student-athletes. Previously, the Council had determined that student-athletes could play no more than 50 percent of the maximum allowable games without losing a season of eligibility. This positively impacts student-athletes in cross country, soccer, volleyball and football.
WT Football is currently in negotiations to add games to the upcoming schedule as they can play a maximum of 10 this fall. Soccer and volleyball will be competing in an All-LSC schedule in the spring of 2021.
“Coach Hunter Hughes and I are working to fill out a schedule to give opportunities for our team to compete, particularly in front of our home fans,” Director of Athletics Michael McBroom said. “We are optimistic that we will be able to add 3-5 more contests to be announced soon.”
The Buffs open the 2020 campaign on Sept. 19 at the friendly confines of Buffalo Stadium against Oklahoma Panhandle State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Single game tickets for the season opener will go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 15.
