Precinct 2 Potter County Commissioner Mercy Murguia is leaving her position on the governing body next month.

According to Potter County officials, Murguia will be stepping down from the Potter County Commission on September 8 after serving on the body since 2011. Murguia is leaving the board in order to move to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, officials said.

Presently, Murguia represents the area of Potter County which includes downtown, East Amarillo, and part of North Amarillo.

After Murguia leaves the body, Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner told local news outlets that applications will be accepted for her replacement. Commissioners will ultimately choose a replacement for Murguia after applications are accepted.

Murguia, a Democrat, was most recently re-elected to her position unopposed in 2018. Whoever is selected to replace Murguia will serve until the general election for a new term can be held next year.
