Canyon City Commission passed its legislative priorities by a vote of 3-1 on Monday afternoon, with Place 3 commissioner Paul Lyons voting against. (Commissioner Place 4 Kelsey Ward was absent.)
The item received some discussion due to the fact that, while the resolution references a document titled “City of Canyon Legislative Agenda 2023," no such document was included in the agenda packet.
The packet did include a bulleted list of items the staff intends to watch and another bulleted list of items the city intends to support. Assistant City Manager Jon Behrens noted that, in previous years, similar bulleted lists were considered the legislative priorities, despite not being titled that. City Secretary Gretchen Mercer noted after the split vote that the meeting minutes would clarify that the bulleted items are the city's legislative priorities.
The commission also officially called the May 6th election. All five places on the commission are up for election. So far, according to the City of Canyon, applications for a place on the ballot have been submitted for all places, though no races currently feature more than one candidate.
For Places 1, 2, and 3, incumbents Gary Hinders, Cody Jones, and Paul R. Lyons have filed. Robyn Cranmer has filed to run for Place 4 and Danny J. Potter has filed to run for Place 5. Incumbents Kelsey Ward (Place 4) and Randy Ray (Place 5) have not filed to run again as of writing.
The deadline to file for a place on the ballot is February 17th at 5:00 pm. The deadline to file as a write-in is February 21st. If no races are contested, the election may be cancelled. In 2021, Zachary Unger challenged incumbent Randy Ray, with that race being the only contested one on the City of Canyon ballot.
