Amarillo City Council is set to hold a work session to discuss the City of Amarillo Governance & Ends Policies and City Charter on Tuesday, March 26th.
The work session was first proposed by Mayor Cole Stanley earlier this month. The proposal came in the wake of renewed attention to the Governance & Ends Policies after the since-rescinded changes to city leadership made by former Interim City Manager Andrew Freeman.
According to Stanley, the work session will be focused on the Governance & Ends Policies document, the most recent version of which was adopted in April 2019, before any of the current members of the council were first elected. The City Charter will also be listed as a topic, though this will mostly be so the council “can discuss what the charter states and how it relates to” the Governance & Ends Policies. Stanley had previously told The Amarillo Pioneer he would be open to a charter amendment election, though this doesn’t appear to be the focus of the upcoming workshop.
Mayor Stanley and Councilman Josh Craft have floated the idea of suspending the current Governance & Ends Policies, though this proposal has received pushback from Councilman Tipps. “I do not believe suspending them is a good idea,” said Tipps. “I am not educated on these enough to know what that would open up.” Councilmen Tom Scherlen and Les Simpson have not expressed a position on suspending the policies.
As of writing, no agenda has been posted for the workshop, though Stanley has stated it is set to take place at 8:30 on Tuesday, March 26th. The council is also scheduled to hold a regular meeting at 3:00 pm on that day. The Amarillo Pioneer will provide updates once further details are announced.
