Paul Engler, a major benefactor for West Texas A&M University, passed away on May 3rd, according to the university.
Engler, a prominent figure in the cattle business, was the plaintiff in the high-profile lawsuit against Oprah Winfrey in the 1990s. In the suit, he alleged she had made false statements about food safety in the beef industry. Though Oprah won the lawsuit, Engler became a local icon and defended his decision to bring the lawsuit.
Engler became the namesake of Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences and the Paul and Virginia Engler College of Business after pledging to donate at least $1 million per year for at least 80 years.
