Lubbock Voters Reject Marijuana Decriminalization

Voters in Lubbock rejected Prop A, a petition-initiated proposal to decriminalize low-level marijuana offenses, election night results indicate.

The measure, also known as “Freedom Act Lubbock,” had been supported by a group of the same name with help from Ground Game Texas. The group petitioned for Lubbock City Council to consider their proposed ordinance. After the council rejected the proposal, the group exercised their right to place the item on the ballot.

Much of the vote in favor of decriminalization came from areas of the city nearest to Texas Tech, though other parts of the city came out heavily against the proposal.

Throughout the election, Project Destiny Texas PAC, a group with links to anti-abortion activist Mark Lee Dickson, campaigned against the proposal under the name “Protect Lubbock.” The group criticized the proposal on numerous grounds, claiming that the amount decriminalized under the proposal is not “low-level,” and that decriminalization puts the community at risk.

Attorney General Ken Paxton has been one of the main figures in the fight against municipalities decriminalizing marijuana in Texas. Earlier this year, he sued several cities that had enacted ordinances similar to the one rejected by Lubbock voters.

Lubbock voters also sent the races for Mayor and City Council District 2 to runoffs.

As of the time of writing, Prop A was failing with 64.62% against.
