City Council to Hold Charter Review Process Workshop

Amarillo City Council is set to meet on Thursday, May 9th, to discuss the City Charter review process, as well as the Governance and Ends policy.

The meeting will be facilitated by Baker Tilly, a consultant firm hired by the council earlier this year to conduct the city manager search process. The firm now appears to be also involved in helping the city with the charter review process, which was kicked off by the council last month.

The members of city council recently submitted their finalists for the charter review committee, which will meet over the next few months to formulate proposed amendments to the Amarillo City Charter. Any proposed amendments would need to receive voter approval in the November election. The most recent charter amendment, which reduced the number of required council meetings each year, was approved by voters in 2020.

The meeting also comes on the heels of another recent work session held by the council on the Governance and Ends policy, with that meeting having come in the wake of changes made then unmade by then-Interim City Manager Andrew Freeman.

The meeting will be held in the Council Chamber at City Hall at 8:30 am. The full agenda can be found at this link. According to a press release from the city, the meeting will be open to the public and will be livestreamed on YouTube.
