Rosser's Ramblings: Hunter, Marco and The Mask

by Trent Rosser

So I mentioned that we have a new kitten. Again, his name is Marco.  We have only had him for a few short weeks, but he is already spoiled. He is white with black spots. He has already done more than Hunter has done when it came to “mouse hunting”. Hunter was in the floor watching T.V. with us a while back and a mouse ran across the floor. Next thing I know I have a 90 pound dog on my lap! This kitten, that weighs less than 2 pounds, has already killed a mouse. He left him in the middle of the floor so I can step on it in the dark, barefooted!  Which I did!  Now, unlike Rascal (our old cat), Marco loves to play. And he loves to attack legs and tails. He attacks my legs, Hunters legs and Hunters tail. Hunter just sits there and takes it. Every now and then Hunter will push him off and then they start to play tag. It is quite comical when you see a huge dog running from a small kitten!

At first Marco would try to play with Hunter, but he did not want anything to do with Marco. Hunter would get up and move if Marco was chewing on his legs or tail. Then the unimaginable happened. If Hunter and I could understand each other, I would already know what the conversation would have been the other day.

Me: What the hell happened???

Hunter: I found Marco’s mother, they looked quite a bit alike and I just wanted to talk to her.

Me: What were you going to say to her? And be honest this time, don’t tell me you were just trying to be friends and then try to eat her like you did the gopher.

Hunter: That wasn’t my fault, the gopher had big teeth and I did not want him chewing up the dog house that you built.

Me: Really, like you did the possum?

Hunter: Well, with the possum it wasn’t my fault either. I thought he was playing dead, so I kept playing catch with him. Only he was the ball! He-he-he.

Me: That don’t explain what happened this time.

Hunter: Well, like I said, I was going to start yelling at Marco's mother for letting him move in and he gets to sleep inside all the time, and I doesn't.

Me: Why did you think it was Marco’s mother?

Hunter: Well, Marco is white with black spots, and his mother is full black, except for the white stripe that goes straight down her back.  I started to bark and yell at her and went up to her and she turned around, lifted her tail and she….. She FARTED on me! *sob* and I can’t get that smell off of me!! *sob*

Me: Yep, You’re defiantly sleeping outside for a while! You will be getting a bath also! You’re the only dog I know that likes to play in water but you can’t stand to get a bath.

That would be just one of the many conversations that we would have had so far.  So now Hunter and Marco are best friends and they are always playing. I used to get down in the floor and play with hunter, but not anymore. That damn cat, he keeps attacking my arms, thinking that they might be legs. I don’t have the tough skin and fur to protect me like Hunter does.  They are both quite comical, especially when the cat tries to sneak attack Hunter. That poor dog will be just casually walking by and from somewhere on the couch comes a white and black streak flying in the air with its little stubby legs and arms out trying to land on top of Hunter. Again, a small kitten that is less than 2 pounds is trying to take down a 90 pound dog. It reminds me of the animal channel when a lone lion is trying to take down the lead elephant in the herd. Hunter just spins around and puts his paw on top of the kitten and looks at him. Then he casually walks off, unless he wants to play tag with him, and then it starts to sound like the whole herd of elephants coming down the hallway.

Now, I did get a Halloween mask this year. It is of a snarling wolf.  It has the fur on top with the fangs showing and long nose.  It is the latex kind that you pull over your head. It is a little hard to see through, and this is where I almost died. Hunter is very protective of me, the house, and the yard. But he is most protective of my wife. He barks at us when we are playing around and acting like one of us is hurting the other one. He does not like that at all. So, I came home and put the mask on. We let Hunter in and as he was rushing down the hall, he spotted me. He came running up and when he saw what was on my head, he came to a complete stop. The strange thing is that he did not bark. He looked at me in a strange way. You could tell that he did not like it and before I knew it he was snarling at me! I took that mask off faster than a bullet! I've been slowly getting him use to it, and he has finally come to terms that it is Halloween time and it is the time of year where the little ghosts and goblins come for free candy. We want him to be relaxed, that way nothing will happen when we open the door and there is a 4 ft Freddy Kruger standing there.  After all, he might not get any candy, but he can enjoy Halloween, also.

As I write this, I am trying to figure out how to tell Hunter that he might have company in his dog house.  My wife was giving me a hard time and said something about her being kidnapped. I, of course, smarted off and said, “I’m not worried, they would bring ya back.” This apparently was the wrong thing to say. So, now I am in the dog house with Hunter. I just hope Marco’s mom doesn’t come back!
