Amarillo Residents Want New Signs Following Semi-Truck Accident

Some residents in Southeast Amarillo are demanding new traffic signs following a semi truck accident.

At the overpass at Interstate 27 and Southeast 15th Avenue, a semi truck became stuck after attempting to make a left handed turn. The truck was able to make the turn before the back end of trailer was caught between the curb and the bridge.

Jimmy Hammons, a resident who lives near the scene, is one of the people in the area who is demanding new signs.

"I've talked to the police and the guys from the [Texas Department of Transportation] about it and it went in one ear and out the other," Hammons said. "I suggested they put up signs there because it's impossible for a truck pulling a trailer to make that turn."

Hammons says that there have been at least two incidents of semi trucks becoming stuck underneath the overpass. Following the first incident earlier this year, Hammons spoke to the Amarillo Police Department about the signs, but no signs were ever posted.

No signs have been posted near the turn lane underneath the overpass warning drivers of height restrictions.

"The solution to save everybody money, government and taxpayers, is to put up a sign." Hammons said.
