Traffic Sign Posted Following Repeated Semi Wrecks

After a string of incidents over the past several months with semi truck accidents in Southeast Amarillo, traffic signs have been posted asking trucks to turn around.

Following several accidents in which semi trucks and trailers have been crashed while attempting to make the turn underneath the overpass at Southwest 15th Avenue and Interstate 27, signs have been posted telling drivers that no semi trucks are allowed through the turn. The signs were posted following the most recent incident that occurred in late October.

Officers from the Amarillo Police Department said during the most recent incident that the crashes have been occurring frequently at that particular location. Residents have also expressed concerns about the turn lane in the past. As we previously reported, Jimmy Pressley Hammons, a resident who lives near the turn lane said that the accidents have been occurring for years and that signs were needed in that spot.

"I've talked to the police and the guys from the [Texas Department of Transportation] about it and it went in one ear and out the other," Hammons said following an incident that occurred in late October. "I suggested they put up signs there because it's impossible for a truck pulling a trailer to make that turn."

The new sign features information telling drivers that a turnaround is located in that spot and that no trucks are allowed at the point.

It is unclear whether Amarillo Police plan to issue any citations for truck drivers who do not obey the signage.
