WTAMU Faculty to Break Ground on War Memorial

Faculty and students from West Texas A&M University will gather on Friday, November 10th to take part in the groundbreaking of a new WTAMU War Memorial.

On Friday, at 10:30am, faculty will join together will community members, representatives, dignitaries, state officials and local government officials to take part in the ground breaking ceremony for a new war memorial. The War Memorial, to be located on Old Main’s southeast lawn, will commemorate those who served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

The memorial will also feature flag poles and granite tablets engraved with the names of West Texas A&M University’s fallen veterans. Names of the University's fallen soldiers will include seven from World War I, fifty-four from World War II, three from Korea, twenty-three from Vietnam and one during the Gulf War.

WTAMU officials say that the memorial's expected date of completion will be sometime in May of 2018.

Weekend festivites at WTAMU, honoring Veterans' Day, will also include an event at Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, a Military Appreciation football game at WTAMU's Kimbrough Memorial Stadium, and a military ball.
